Protesters take out semi nude march against inflation in New Delhi

Reserve Bank of IndiaNew Delhi, August 7 : A group of protesters took out a semi nude march here today to demonstrate against the rising prices of basic commodities.

Activists of Indian Justice Party marched on Delhi roads wearing neckties over underpants, which were covered with plant leaves, and took out a demonstration against the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)-led central government for failing to curb inflation.

The protesters lamented the alleged apathy on the part of the central government in failing to control the rising prices of basic commodities making it difficult for people to make the ends meet.

Supreme Court ends Provident Fund scandal hearing

Supreme CourtNew Delhi, Aug 7 : The Supreme Court on Thursday abruptly ended a hearing on the controversial Uttar Pradesh Provident Fund (PF) scandal allegedly involving some retired judges.

A bench, comprising Justice B N Aggrawal, Justice V S Sirpurkar and Justice G S Singhvi abandoned the hearing following contemptuous remarks made by former Union Minister and senior counsel Shanti Bhushan and his son Prashant Bhushan.

Justice Aggrawal observed that he was "recusing". However, the other two judges neither agree nor differ. The matter has now been left to the Chief Justice of India for his decision.

Japanese women live longest in the world

Japan, TokyoNew Delhi, August 7 : Japanese women have topped the world''''s longevity ranks for 23 years on the back of healthy food habits and tight social ties, among other factors.

A Japanese Health Ministry report suggests that girls born last year can expect to live until they are 86 years old, which would make them the longest survivors in the world.

The report also suggests that boys born in 2007 can expect to live until they are 79.2 years old, ranking third after Iceland and Hong Kong.

Government data shows that a tenth of Japan’s population is aged 75 years or older.

Indian police issue sketches of bombings suspects

New Delhi - Police in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, where terrorist bombings last month claimed 56 lives, have released sketches of three suspects behind the attacks, officials said Thursday.

"The sketches prepared on descriptions given by witnesses were released by the city's joint police commissioner HP Singh on Wednesday evening," said inspector TA Chawda at the Ahmedabad police control room.

"One of the suspects is believed to be the man who purchased the cycles on which the explosives were planted. The others were men who planted the bombs in the Narol, Hatkeshwar and Raipur areas," the policeman said.

BJP MPs say cash-for-vote sting tapes doctoredNew Delhi, August 7 : Two of the three Bharatiya Janata Party MPs, who displayed bundles of currency notes in the Lok Sabha on July 22, today alleged that the tapes regarding the sting operation have been tampered with.

Ashok Argal and Fagan Singh Kulaste, who deposed before the seven-member parliamentary committee examining the cash-for-vote, contended that their version was not recorded in the tapes.

Interestingly, the two MPs made their charge to reporters, but did not make it before the panel.
