Lankan Tamil issue rocks Parliament again

LTTE FlagNew Delhi, Feb 19 : The plight of Tamils in Sri Lanka rocked proceeding in the Lok Sabha, for the second consecutive day on Thursday, with Speaker Somnath Chatterjee adjourning the House due to pandemonium.

Several lawmakers of various political parties marched to the Well of the House shouting slogans on Lankan issue.

On Wednesday, the house was adjourned External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) had done more harm to ethnic Sri Lankan Tamils and urged it to surrender their weapons.

Somnath criticizes MPs for disrupting Question Hour

Somnath ChatterjeeNew Delhi, Feb 19 : Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Thursday criticized Members of Parliament (MPs) for their behaviour, saying they did not deserve even one paisa of public money.

"I think Parliament should be adjourned sine die. Public money should not be spent on useless allowances for you. You don't deserve one paise of public money," Chatterjee said as several MPs stormed the well of Lok Sabha raising a spate of issues and disrupted Question Hour.

Inflation slips to 3.92 per centNew Delhi, Feb 19 : Inflation figures based on the official Wholesale Price Index (WPI) showed a fall to 3.92 per cent for the week ended February 7 from 4.92 percent a week before.

Inflation rates declined primarily due to falling prices of manufactured items.

The WPI for all commodities declined 0.2 percent to 228 (provisional) from 228.4 (provisional) the week before.

During the week, prices of manufactured items such as sugar, imported edible oil and textile items such as cotton yarn got cheaper.

Multi-dimensional body to probe Satyam fraud: CBINew Delhi/ Hyderabad, Feb 19: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has said it would form a multi-disciplinary investigation team to probe the accounting fraud at IT major Satyam Computer Services Ltd.

The CBI, which has taken over the probe, said a consultative mechanism was being worked out with all departments concerned.
