Exodus continues from flood-affected Bihar

Saharsa/Patna/New Delhi, Sept 1: People continue to flee flood-affected parts in Bihar for safer places, even as the authorities have stepped up the tempo of relief work.

At a railway station in New Delhi, hoards of migrants were seen on Sunday, sitting with their families and whatever they could collect in the name of belongings.

Recounting his harrowing experience, Mohammad Jabbar of Supaul District, where water breached the walls of thousands of dwellings, said that they first took the news of the floods in the region as a hoax.

Congress, Samajwadi Party to hold seat sharing talks for LS polls in UP

New Delhi, Sep 1: The Congress and the Samajwadi Party are to hold seat sharing talks for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh today.

The Congress side, which is to be led by Rahul Gandhi, will consist of the party General Secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh, Digvijay Singh, and the State Congress president, Rita Bahuguna Joshi

The Samajwadi Party side will be represented by party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, General Secretary Amar Singh and Mulayam''s brother Ram Gopal Yadav, also a General Secretary of the party.

Digvijay Singh expressed confidence about reaching an agreement on seat sharing arrangement, and added that it would be pragmatic, realistic and honourable for both sides.

New Delhi, Sept 1: Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor will begin a four-day official visit to the United Kingdom today to strengthen existing defence ties.

The visit by the Army Chief will add the necessary impetus to the existing defence relationship and broad-base it into a mutually beneficial partnership.

During his visit, the Army Chief will interact with the senior military and civilian defence hierarchy. He will also discuss various defence related issues to strengthen existing defence ties with UK.

General Kapoor will visit Royal School of Artillery at Larkhill, Defence Academy at Shrivenham, Land Warfare Centre in Salisbury plains, Edinburgh Castle in Scotland and National Army Museum.

Manmohan Singh presents national awards for small and medium enterprises

12 police killed in Maoist attack in eastern India

Jharkhand man on a mission to bring greenery in PalamauNew Delhi - At least 12 policemen were killed Saturday when their jeep was blown up by a landmine in an area affected by Maoist insurgency in India's eastern state of Jharkhand.

The killings come one day after six policemen were killed in a similar blast in Jharkhand's neighbouring state of Chhattisgarh.

The policemen were on a long-range patrol when the landmine planted by suspected Maoist rebels exploded in the East Singhbhum district, police official Madhusudan Bari told the PTI news agency.
