India proposes prohibition of nuclear weapons

M K NarayananNew Delhi, Feb 7 : India has proposed an international convention for complete prohibition of nuclear weapons to reduce the dangers posed by atomic weapons to humanity.

National Security Adviser M K Narayanan on Saturday said that India is perhaps the only nuclear weapons state to openly favour negotiation of a Nuclear Weapons Convention leading to global non-discriminatory and verifiable elimination of nuclear weapons.

Addressing an international security conference in Munich, Narayanan declared that India advocate''s global verifiable and non-discriminatory nuclear disarmament.

China vows to dig deeper into online porn crackdown

ChinaNew Delhi, February 7 : China has pledged to intensify its online porn onslaught, which will now spread to cell phone websites, chat rooms and instant messenger groups.

According to information from the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, till February 5, 1,635 illegal websites and 217 blogs displaying `lewd' content faced a shutdown, while more than four million porn-related posts or messages were trashed, reports the China Daily.

Vajpayee put on mechanical ventilator support at AIIMS

Atal Bihari VajpayeeNew Delhi, Feb. 6 : The health condition of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee deteriorated on Friday, and doctors had to put him on "mechanical ventilation".

According to a latest medical bulletin released by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) this evening, Vajpayee continues to have lower respiratory tract infection, which has worsened since the morning. He is being monitored by a team of doctors.

Vajpayee's other basic parameters including, his blood pressure, liver and kidney functions were normal, said doctors.

Heavy snowfall blocks national highway in Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir MapNew Delhi, Feb. 6 : The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was blocked on Friday due to the heaviest snowfall in Kashmir in recent years. Snowfall has brought the traffic movement to a standstill.

The strategic 300-kilometre-long Highway is the valley''s only connection with rest of the country.

Hundreds of trucks and other vehicles going either way remained stranded on the highway due to the accumulation of snow.

"No provision of food, no bedding is available here. Nobody has come here to whom we can tell our problem," said Jarnail Singh, a truck driver.
