Tony Awards nominees announced

tonyNew York  - The first Broadway revival of the 1949 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific was among the leading nominees announced Tuesday for the Tony Awards.

But the classic musical had to settle for second place as its 11 nominations were beaten by the 13 nods given to In the Heights, a hip-hop and salsa musical set in upper Manhattan. August: Osage County was the most nominated play with seven nominations.

Among the big disappointments was Young Frankenstein, which failed to gain any nominations in the major categories.

In addition to In The Heights, the coveted best musical prize is being contested by Cry-Baby, Passing Strange and Xanadu. South Pacific competes in the best musical revival category with Grease, Gypsy, and Sunday In The Park With George. The best play category included August: Osage County, Rock 'n' Roll, The Seafarer and The
39 Steps. (dpa)
