Top Bangladesh, Myanmar leaders to meet over gas exploration row

Dhaka, BangladeshDhaka  - Bangladesh's chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed is expected to meet Myanmar junta chief General Thein Sein to discuss disputes over territorial waters on the sideline of the BIMSTEC summit to be held in New Delhi Thursday, officials in Dhaka said Wednesday.

The leaders are expected to discuss maritime boundary demarcations, the lack of which had caused tension between the two neighbours over oil and gas exploration in the disputed Bay of Bengal waters.

Bangladesh's foreign affairs adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, who had a meeting with his Myanmar counterpart Wednesday, said in a statement that they agreed to continue high-level contacts between the two countries.

Referring to the visit of Myanmar Vice-Senior General Maung Aye's visit to Bangladesh in September, Iftekhar said the two nations need to follow up on the ground after a very useful discussion during the recent visit.

"We agreed to continue with high level contacts including a meeting between the Myanmar Prime Minister and the Chief Adviser when they both arrive in New Delhi," the foreign affairs adviser said.

Bangladesh's chief adviser and the Myanmar prime minister are scheduled to reach New Delhi by Wednesday evening to attend the second summit of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation.

Earlier this month, Bangladesh lodged strong protests against Myanmar's alleged intuition into Bangladesh's territorial waters for oil and gas exploration. Both sides amassed warships in the bay and troops on their respective borders.

Tension defused, however, after Dhaka initiated multi-pronged diplomatic efforts. It involved China and South Korea in the process. Dhaka and Yangon are expected to hold further talks, preferably sometime in the next week. (dpa)
