Turkish science editor sacked for Darwin story goes back to work

Turkish science editor sacked for Darwin story goes back to work Ankara  - The editor of a Turkish scientific magazine who was reportedly removed from her position for commissioning a cover-page story on the 200th anniversary of evolution theory founder Charles Darwin's birth will be allowed to retain her job, Turkish newspapers reported on Wednesday.

Science and Technology magazine editor Cigdem Atakuman returned to work on Tuesday, Hurriyet newspaper reported on Wednesday, a week after reports that a deputy director of the state-run Turkish Science and Research Institute (TUBITAK) had ordered the controversial pulling of the Darwin anniversary cover story.

News that the evolution theory special had been replaced by a story on climate change outraged Turkish secularists who accused the moderate Islamic government of having placed its own conservative religious supporters in positions of power at TUBITAK.

Government ministers later condemned the decision, saying that censorship has no place in science. (dpa)
