TVS partners with Convergence Energy to set up extensive network of fast-charging stations

Indian multinational motorcycle manufacturer TVS Motor Company has announced the signing of a partnership agreement with Convergence Energy Services Ltd. (CESL) to setup an extensive network of fast-charging stations for its electric two-wheelers. New Delhi-headquartered TVS is the third largest two-wheeler manufacturer and the 2nd largest two-wheeler exporter in India, selling its products in more than 60 countries around the world.

CESL is a wholly owned subsidiary of Energy Efficiency Services Ltd. (EEL) under the Union Ministry of Power in India. It is focused on providing clean, reliable, as well as affordable energy. In particular, it focuses on energy solutions that lie at the confluence of clean energy and electric mobility as part of its efforts to boost mass adoption of EVs to prevent global warming and climate change.

Under the newly signed partnership deal, TVS and Convergence Energy will work together to setup an extensive network of fast-charging stations for the TVS iQube electric scooters. Fast charging stations will be set up in key urban locations, such as dealerships, petrol pumps, and commercial centers.

TVS has plans to launch the all-electric iQube scooter in at least twenty cities across India before the end of FY 2021-22. Currently, the EV is available only in Bangalore and Delhi.

Manu Saxena, Vice President of TVS Future Mobility & Dealer Transformation, said that his company was feeling proud on becoming the first two-wheeler manufacturer to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with CESL.

Speaking on the topic, Saxena added, “We will continue to contribute to India’s electric adoption as TVS iQube Electric will be available in over 20 cities in India. In addition to its home charging options, it will be the TVS dealership charging network, and the emerging PUBLIC CHARGING ecosystem, with strong players like CESL that will accelerate India’s EV journey.”

India is unquestionably one of the pioneers in the field of two-wheeler electrification. Several conventional manufacturers continue to accelerate their pace of transition from ICEs to EVs, while dozens of startups have dedicated their resources solely towards the production of lightweight, electric two-wheelers. Union as well as state governments are playing their parts towards the green shift by offering various incentives and tax rebates. Bullish on the green shift, many industry experts believe that electric scooters and motorcycles will match the number of fossil fuel-powered two-wheelers on India's busy streets sooner than later.
