Two more US airlines to charge for checked baggage

Washington - Two more US airlines - United Airlines and US Airways - are to start charging for luggage checked by many passengers, media reports said early Friday.

The two companies are following suit of American Airlines, which made a similar move some weeks ago.

United Airlines said Thursday it would start charging 15 dollars starting Friday for passengers flying on leisure fares booked in advance. In addition, it will charge 25 dollars for a second suitcase.

US Airways said it would match the 15 dollar fee starting July 9.

The moves are designed to help compensate for fuel costs which have doubled in just one year. (dpa)
