The police officers - one from the state police and one from the federal force - were attacked as they were travelling to the town of Tecpan de Galeana to investigate an anonymous tip that four members of one family had been murdered at their home.

After the two police officers were killed and at least six more were injured by unidentified attackers, other security officers responded to the scene, where they found four members of a family killed at their home.

An average of 10 people are killed everyday in Mexico and a further three are kidnapped, according to public and private studies.
