Unilateral disarmament is opposed by majority of people in U.S.
A poll released on Thursday has said that a majority of U. S. citizens think nuclear weapons are morally acceptable and do not support unilateral disarmament,
Angus Reid Public Opinion reported that more than half, 61 percent, would support an agreement that forces all countries to give up nuclear weapons. But only 22 percent say possession of a nuclear arsenal is "morally wrong."
It is said by more than four in 10, 43 percent, that possession of nuclear weapons puts the United States in a strategically sound position. But 36 percent say the United States should work toward elimination of all nuclear weapons around the world, 35 percent favor a considerable reduction in nuclear weapons, while 12 percent say the country should keep its current stockpile of nuclear weapons and 6 percent favor developing new ones.
1,005 adults were surveyed by the Canadian polling company online on March 31 and April 1. The poll has a margin of error of 3.1 percent either way. (With Inputs from Agencies)
