30,000 in Detroit ignore rains to come together against breast cancerAccording to the organizers, about 30,000 people, many clad in pink, walked and ran in rainy downtown Detroit Saturday to raise money to fight breast cancer.

Bad weather couldn't keep the mass of women, men and children away from the 19th annual Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure.

Maureen Keenan Meldrum, chairwoman of the race, which began at Comerica Park, said "We're warriors and a little bit of rain isn't going to stop us from fighting this disease."

Participants walked or ran 5 kilometers or walked a mile to raise money for research, awareness and treatment of breast cancer.

The number of teams climbed from 500 last year to 600 this year, organizers said.

It was also reported that Mayor Dave Bing and his wife, Yvette, along with several other politicians, participated. (With Inputs from Agencies)
