80,000 lawyers on strike in Bihar to protest lawyer's killing

Patna, Nov 15 : Over 80,000 lawyers in Bihar went on strike on Thursday to protest against the murder of additional public prosecutor Ramnaresh Sharma who was shot dead by two unidentified men at his residence in Begusarai, about 126 km from here, a week ago.

Lawyers of Patna High Court, district and sub-divisional courts, central administrative tribunal and all other judicial forums in Bihar are protesting against the lack of security provided to them especially when they are fighting cases against criminals.

Sharma, a 55-year-old human rights activist known for his vocal stand against criminals was allegedly killed by goons of Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) MP Surajbhan Singh

Around 18 public prosecutors (PPs) and additional public prosecutors (APPs) of Begusarai district court have also resigned in protest.

Additional Director General of police (law and order) Anil Sinha said, “ All the judges, PPs and APPs involved in speedy trial of criminal cases would be provided adequate security”.

"DGP Ashish Ranjan Sinha has directed the superintendents of police of all districts to make adequate security arrangements for them (lawyers), " added Sinha. (ANI)
