Airtel Hoping to Seek More 3G Licenses in Africa
Bharti Airtel is seeking to expand its 3G licenses to more place in Africa within the next year. 3G is the company’s biggest focus for the next year and Airtel is hoping to get more licenses in 16 more countries.
Manoj Kohlo, Chief Executive for International Operations, is worried that Zain’s tariff at 30-40% premium was not sustainable. Airtel bought Zain’s African business last year for $9 billion.
Airtel is currently in ten countries, but it is hoping to speak with the government in hopes to get more licenses. Bharati Airtel is India’s largest mobile phone company and is looking to expand its operations to 16 countries in Africa.
The company is attempting to model a similar system to that of Indus Towers in India. Airtel has announced that Africa is its main destined country and wants to continue to business there.
Bharati is on course to meet its $5 billion revenue and 100 million subscriber target in Africa by 2013. Their current number of subscribers is 45 million and they are seeing revenue of $2.9 billion at the end of March.
