"All Time High" Hit by Chlamydia Infection Cases
The very latest figures shared have revealed that in Australia, the number of chlamydia cases have managed to hit an all time high, with the reports of infections more than tripling over the past 10 years.
As per number shared by the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System, in 2009, as many as 61,172 cases of the STI were recorded in 2009 alone, as opposed to 2000's figure of 16,690 reports.
Most of the new cases of the infection were in Queensland, which had 16,592 infections, followed by NSW's number of 14,614 and 12,993 infection reports in Victoria.
"Regardless of whether this is a result of better screening processes or unsafe sex practices, the one thing that is a certainty is that chlamydia is out there and those that don't use condoms are at risk", said National Clinical Adviser of Marie Stopes International, Jill Michelson.
The rapid rise in numbers has worried experts who are urging people to get regular tests and use condoms.
