London - British singer Amy Winehouse was Friday found not guilty of assaulting a fan at a charity ball last year, a jury ruled after a two-day trial in London.
The 25-year-old singer had denied the charge that she hit a female dancer in the face following a row over a photograph session.
While the prosecution alleged that the singer acted with "deliberate and unjustifiable violence," witness accounts on whether she actually struck the fan were contradictory and inconclusive.
Delivering his verdict, the judge said: "Having heard the evidence from all the witnesses, I cannot be sure that this was not an accident."
Winehouse, who has a history of alcohol and drug abuse, looked confused as the verdict was read out and shrugged her shoulders.
But she later told reporters: "I'm relieved. I'm going home."(dpa)
