Argentinian parliamentary elections spell loss for president

Argentinian parliamentary elections spell loss for presidentBuenos Aires - Official results from Argentina's parliamentary elections showed severe losses for the party of President Christina Kirchner and her husband Nestor.

The couple's FJPV Peronist Front for Victory party suffered heavy losses across the country, likely meaning it will lose its parliamentary majority and forcing the president into more negotiations with opposition groups.

The results also mean that opposition candidates can look toward the 2011 presidential elections with more optimism.

The election was widely seen as a litmus test of the Kirchners and their leadership. Christina Kirchner succeeded her husband to the presidency in 2007. But since then, large parts of the populace have become disenchanted with the couple's economic management.

Opposition candidate Francisco de Narvaez, of the Union Pro coalition, won 35 per cent of the vote for a legislative seat for the province that includes the nation's capital, Buenos Aires. Nestor Kirchner came in second place with 32 per cent of the vote, according to early returns.

The result will likely ensure Kirchner a place in the legislature, but, nonetheless, is considered a rebuke from voters. (dpa)
