Aung San Suu Kyi meets with lawyers as verdict nears

Aung San Suu Kyi meets with lawyers as verdict nearsYangon  - Myanmar's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi met with her lawyers Thursday ahead of a verdict expected next week, but which could be delayed again, a security official said.

Four lawyers, including U Nyan Win who is also the spokesman for the National League for Democracy that Suu Kyi leads, met with her at Insein Prison for nearly two hours, the official said.

They discussed the verdict expected on August 11. Suu Kyi and three others have been charged with breaking the terms of her house.

The security source also said that the US national who swam to Suu Kyi's house-cum-prison in May that resulted in the charges remains in hospital.

John William Yettaw was taken from Insein Prison in a Yangon suburb to hospital Monday night. He has heart disease and diabetes, his lawyer U Khin Maung Oo said at the time.

If Yettaw remains in hospital on August 11, the verdict will be delayed again, the source said.

Yettaw, 53, swam to Suu Kyi's lakeside home last May 3 and stayed there until May 5. He had previously visited her compound in November 2008 and gave her servants a copy of the Book of Mormon.

As a result of the May 3-5 visit, Suu Kyi, 64, stands accused of breaking the terms of her house detention by allowing Yettaw to swim to her home and stay, albeit uninvited, in her compound.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate has spent a total of 14 of the past 20 years under house arrest. If found guilty of breaking the terms of her house detention, which officially ended on May 27, Suu Kyi faces a minimum of three years in jail and a maximum of five.

Her two housekeepers, Khin Khin Win and Win Ma Ma, face similar charges for accommodating Yettaw's surprise visit, and Yettaw faces several months in jail for breaching various laws, including a prohibition against swimming in Inya Lake, on which Suu Kyi's family compound sits.

The court on July 31 postponed until August 11 its verdict on Suu Kyi and the three others in order to review legal questions related to the case.(dpa)
