"Beatrice and Virgil", as Martel's second novel is called, follows Henry, a prize winning writer who wants to write a book on the Holocaust and is pulled into the world of a taxidermist and the lives of a donkey named Beatrice and a monkey called Virgil.

According to Diya Kar Hazra of Penguin India, who have acquired the Indian subcontinent rights of the book, just like the "Life of Pi", this too is a wildly imaginative and multi-layered novel.
