BSNL to provide cheap broadband services in Himachal villagesState-owned telecom giant Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has introduced affordable broadband services for Himachal villages, in line with its plans to offer high speed internet connectivity to rural and far-flung areas.

A spokesperson from BSNL informed, "Under the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF), BSNL has launched broadband connectivity in rural and tribal areas of the hill state at a subsidized tariff."

The government will offer subsidy up to Rs. 850 for individual and government organizations on first 31 connections, and an additional Rs 4,500 subsidy would be provided for purchasing new computer. The public sector firm will also provide a booth per exchange that will remain offer from 8am to 4pm for providing better customer services.

USOF was launched by Department of Telecommunications for promoting and implementing broadband services in rural India. The government will encourage self-help groups to avail the scheme.

A BSNL official said, "From each exchange, a maximum of 32 connections, including 25 individuals, six government institutions and one kiosk would be subsidized by USOF in the state."
