Child obesity rates high in NorthamptonThe lack of physical workout and healthy exercise is leading cause of bulging lines in children also. Issue of obesity has become an important matter for government as well as medical authorities as obesity increases the risk of many diseases including diabetes, heart disease and even cancer.

The recent study by the East Midlands Public Health Observatory revealed that 33% of pupils in their final year of primary school were officially classed as obese or overweight in 2007/08.

Study also showed that only 19 percent children were obese or overweight children at the reception level in Northampton during 2007/8.

The study was based on the data collected during school child measurement programme for 2007/08.

Analysis of data of whole country revealed that the number of obese children in year six increased from 28.6 per cent in the previous year to 31 per cent in 2007/08.

The county's director of public health Stephen Horsley said: "The increased prevalence of obesity requires a system-wide approach to improving people's physical activity, making healthy food more readily available, and educating people about meal planning and preparation."
