Children use imagination to ease abdominal pain
Children are known for their dynamic imagination. Children of all age groups love to travel to world of their imagination where they can anything from flying to fighting. Recent study revealed that children can be taught to use their imagination to cure their stomachaches along with medical advice.
Research team also found that children who used guided imagery along with medical care were able to cure their abdominal pain more efficiently as compared to children only given medical care.
Researchers reached at the findings after analyzing data collected from 34 children aged 6 to 15 who were getting treatment for abdominal pain at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University Medical Center.
A group of study subjects were given the guided imagery CDs for eight weeks. It was found that 63% of the kids who used guided imagery CDs had nearly half reduction in their pain as compared to 27% of children who received only standard medical care.
After eight weeks the students who were not initially given guided imagery CDs were asked to use these CDs now along with medical care. It was found that 61% of these children had 50% improvement in their abdominal pain.
Researcher Miranda van Tilburg, PhD, of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill said: "What is especially exciting about our study is that children can clearly reduce their abdominal pain a lot on their own with guidance from audio recordings, and they get much better results that way than from medical care alone."
