CVS Health leaves US Chamber of Commerce

According to reports, CVS Health Corp. is leaving the US Chamber of Commerce because of contradictory viewpoint of the powerful lobbying group concerning smoking. Last year, the pharmacy chain stopped selling cigarettes and tobacco products.

It promotes itself as a wide-ranging health-care provider instead of a traditional pharmacy dispensing drugs. On Tuesday, the company said CVS Health aims at assisting people in achieving better health, and according to them, tobacco use is completely opposite to this purpose.

As per reports, this step has been taken by CVS Health Corp. after New York Times reported that the US Chamber of Commerce was working against antismoking laws throughout the world. The largest business lobby of US has over three million members.

The Chamber of Commerce denied the claims and said that the organization doesn't promote cigarette smoking anywhere.

It said in a statement, "The Chamber believes that public health policy aimed at curbing smoking can yield positive results, while still upholding intellectual property protections, honoring international agreements, and not singling out any specific industry for discriminatory treatment or destruction of company brands".

Last year, CVS had reported a profit of $4.7 billion on $139.4 billion in revenue that increased from $4.6 billion and $126.8 billion in sales a year ago.
