Delhiites would have unique ID cards within three years

Identification AuthorityEvery Delhi resident would have unique Identity Number within next three years, as the Unique Identification Authority of India has expedited work for the collection of required data involving different organs of the government machinery.

Nandan Nilekani, the Chairman of ambitious unique identity project, said: "Delhi as a state is much ahead in this respect than other states. With utilization of this database (of Mission Convergence) the authority would be in a position to issue unique ID numbers to the residents of Delhi within three years."

Former Infosys Chief, Mr. Nilekani, a personal choice of PM, Dr. Manmohan Singh, held a meeting with Delhi Chief Minister Mrs. Sheila Dikshit apprising her about the project through a detailed presentation.

He said that the one-of-its-kind project is aimed at providing unique identity cards bearing name, date of birth, address, parent's name and bio-metric detail, to every citizen including children and students. Mr. Nilekani hailed the Delhi government for its co-operation for the speedy implementation of the project.

An official statement states, "Issue of unique ID to most of the persons will overcome problem of duplicate and bogus identity (documents). It would prove to be helpful in implementation of flagship schemes of the central and state governments. It will also be a useful source for online verification and authentication."
