Diarrhea Kills Over 100 People In Nepal
Figure out this one.
More than 100 people have been killed and nearly 4,000 affected by diarrhea in remote districts of Nepal in the past two months alone.
As per Gorkhapatra, a state-run daily, the disease has claimed 88 lives in Jajarkot district, while another eight have died in Rukum, in this Himalayan nation.
On Wednesday alone, 16 people died in the two districts.
The health authorities feel that the contaminated water, lack of sanitation and medical facilities have added to the problems to fight the disease.
In a press release, Informal Sector Service Centre (INSEC), Nepal's biggest rights agency said: "Despite the provisions in the Interim Constitution of Nepal and international covenants to ensure medical facilities and care of the infected people in case of epidemics and other diseases, the government's indifference shows that it is not serious towards their health and lives."
Meanwhile, Umakant Chaudhari, Minister for Population and Health along with a medical team on Wednesday visited Jajarkot to take stock of the state of affairs.
It may be here recalled that in 2007, there were 250 reported deaths due to diarrhea while nearly 35,000 had been affected.
