ED asks Vodafone to provide details relating to spectrum allocation

ED asks Vodafone to provide details relating to spectrum allocationThe Enforcement Directorate (ED) has asked telecom service provider, Vodafone to submit financial details relating to irregularities noted in the allocation of additional spectrum to the company during the tenure of late Pramod Mahajan as the country's telecom minister.

The ED has not registered any case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against Vodafone but it has written a letter to the company's managing director to furnish documents providing details about shareholding pattern and other financial details by April 17.

A spokesperson for the British telecom giant's Indian unit confirmed that the company has received the letter from ED and added that its legal representative will submit all the information asked by the federal agency.

The agency has begun investigating into the allegations of money laundering within the case relating to the irregular additional spectrum allocation. The CBI has been investigating the allocation of the spectrum and has filed an FIR alleging that alleged the Department of Telecommunications had increased the base spectrum for telecom companies from 4.4 megahertz MHz to 6.2 MHz without proper procedure.

The alleged irregularities occurred from 2001 to 2003 during Mahajan's tenure. It claimed that the flawed subscriber-based criteria were followed for spectrum allocation during the tenure.
