EU "deeply concerned" over violence in Iran

EU "deeply concerned" over violence in Iran Brussels - The European Union on Wednesday expressed "deep concern" over the ongoing violence in Iran, calling for moderation from the government and rejecting accusations - particularly against Britain - of meddling in Iranian affairs.

"The EU is deeply concerned over the ongoing brutal violence against demonstrators that has already cost human life," said a EU council presidency statement in Brussels.

Further, accusations that the EU or its individual member states had interfered in Iran's election were "without basis and unacceptable," the EU council presidency said.

"All the member states of the European Union stand together united against accusations levelled against individual EU countries and against attempts to blemish the position of any of them with Iran."

The Iranian regime has accused Britain in particular of instigating demonstrations in Iran after the disputed presidential elections.

The EU called "on the Iranian state leadership to desist from random mass detentions and it emphatically condemns all restrictions placed on the media and journalists."

The crisis must "be resolved by way of democratic dialogue and by peaceful means," the statement added.(dpa)
