EU praises orderly Lebanon elections

EU Commission President Jose Manuel BarrosoBrussels  - The European Union, which sent 100 election monitors to Lebanon, on Monday praised the "good organisation and conduct" of the polls and vowed to engage with the country's new government.

"I would like to congratulate the people of Lebanon for the peaceful conduct of the parliamentary elections. The elections represent yet another milestone in the strengthening of Lebanon's democratisation process and of stability in the region," said EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

"The European Commission now looks forward to the formation of a stable government able and willing to pursue necessary reforms, and stands ready to engage with that government in pursuit of the EU/Lebanon bilateral agenda," Barroso said.

Barroso also praised "the good organisation and conduct of the elections, as reported by the EU Election Observation Mission."

The EU deployed 100 observers throughout Lebanon to observe and assess the electoral process in accordance with international standards.

EU observers will publish a final report on their findings in the coming months.
