Facebook postpones two New York events due to Hurricane Sandy

Facebook postpones two New York events due to Hurricane SandyClose on the heels of the cancellation of Google's Nexus launch and AllThingD's mobile conference - both events scheduled to be held in New York - because of Hurricane Sandy, social network Facebook has now reveled that it is postponing two New York events which it had planned for this week.

The two events which Facebook has officially called off due to Hurricane Sandy include an engineering open house, scheduled to be held on Tuesday; and a Thursday event related to the planned promotion of new buying opportunities within the company's September-announced `Facebook Gifts' service.

About the Thursday event, AllThingsD's Kara Swisher said that Facebook was planning to make an announcement about its new retail partnerships pivoting around the `Gifts' service, which basically allows Facebook users to send real-life gifts to one another, with Facebook being the go-between for the transaction.

Facebook has said in its press notification that, in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, it is cancelling both the scheduled events. While the first event would have given the media a chance to interact with some of the Facebook engineers; the second, Facebook Gifts, event was to be held at New York's well-known toy store, FAO Schwartz.

Meanwhile, the hurricane - which has waylaid the New York events of Google, AllThingsD, and Facebook - is barreling towards the Mid-Atlantic region, and has led to the suspension of public transportation and other services in New York.
