Few Cups of Coffee Everyday may Clean Your Arteries

Korean researchers have revealed through a study that coffee consumption could help people avoid clogged arteries. Blockage in arteries increases the risk of heart disease.

The study involved more than 25,000 male and female employees. The study results indicated that employees who drank three to five cups of coffee a day reduced their chances of suffering from heart diseases. The study has debunked results of previous studies that coffee consumption is linked to heart risk factors as it raises cholesterol or blood pressure.

The latest research on heart benefits of coffee consumption has been published in the journal Heart. With the help of medical scans, the researchers tried to assess heart health of study participants. Their focus was on coronary heart disease, which is caused by clogged coronary arteries because of the gradual build-up of fatty material within their walls.

The researchers deduced that people who drank a few cups of coffee a day had lesser likelihood of having calcium deposits in their coronary arteries than people who drank more than this or no coffee at all. The study authors have suggested more research to confirm and explain the link.

“While this study does highlight a potential link between coffee consumption and lower risk of developing clogged arteries, more research is needed to confirm these findings and understand what the reason is for the association”, said Victoria Taylor of the British Heart Foundation.

Taylor added that the study results surround the South Korean population, which is why it is important to carefully consider these results before generalizing them, given different diet and lifestyle habits of people in the UK. The safe limit for consumption of coffee in the US is 400mg per day.
