Lisbon  - Over 500 firefighters were on duty Sunday battling a wave of forest fires in northern Portugal, with the region around the port city of Porto the hardest-hit, officials said.

A total of 13 different fires were reported, including five threatening Porto.

At the same time, fire departments around the rest of Portugal were being kept on a heightened state of readiness due to the ongoing heat and dry weather conditions.  dpa
