Five people die in the Mexican stampedeAuthorities have said that the crowd at a concert in Guadalupe, Mexico, panicked when gunshots were heard early Sunday and five people died in the ensuing stampede.

Police told the Latin American Herald Tribune that medical personnel treated a dozen other concert-goers who were injured in the 1 a. m. incident in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon.

The newspaper further said that Guadalupe police said the band Intocable was performing at the city's livestock exposition center when the apparent shooting occurred in a section packed with more than 500 people.

Police also said that those killed were crushed.

Officials said at least five people were killed Saturday during fighting between army troops and gunmen in Comales, near the U. S. border, The Herald Tribune also reported.

A classified government report given lawmakers last month estimated 22,743 people have died since President Felipe Calderon declared war on the country's drug cartels in December 2006, well above earlier media estimates of 18,000, the newspaper said. (With Inputs from Agencies)
