Bhubaneswar / Kolkata /Uttar Pradesh/ Guwahati/, June 19 : The flood situation in Orissa, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand has affected the normal life while Assam showed some signs of improvement with cessation of rain.

In Orissa, over ten lakh people have been affected by the current flood in Balesore, Bhadrak and Mayurbhanj district. Twenty seven low-laying coastal gram panchayats of Bhadrak district are still marooned.

In West Bengal the flood situation in Midnapore district turned worse with fresh areas inundated by the Subarnarekha River, leaving nearly three lakh people marooned.

Besides Narayangarh, Sabang and Pingla blocks, which were flooded on Wednesday, over 150 villages in Dantan blocks I and II, about 60 km from Kharagpur, went under water last evening.

According to sources four persons have died and over 12 were missing, while over 10,000 people were rescued from Narayangarh, Pingla and Sabang by the Army and civil defence forces.

In Uttar Pradesh, major rivers continue to swell as the incessant rains continue to lash the majority of area in eastern and western Uttar Pradesh. Many eastern districts are facing flood-like situation as Ghaghra continue to rise.

Torrential rain has also affected normal life in Jharkhand as it recorded 338.1 mm of rainfall -- the heaviest in the past six decades -- since on Tuesday.

The overall flood situation in Assam’s Lakhimpur District has improved with receding of water levels in most of the rivers.

The district authorities have taken up relief and restoration works on war-footing in the flood- devastated areas. (ANI)
