Researchers discovered that gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding after stroke either leads to death or makes person dependent on others for his/her day to day needs.

The researchers analyzed the data collected from the observation of the 6,800 men and women admitted to 11 Ontario hospitals between 2003 and 2006.These people were admitted after an acute ischemic stroke. Out of these, 100 had gastrointestinal bleeding during their recovery period. . Out of these people, 829 died during their hospital stay.1, 374 died within six months after the stroke.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of US has approved flu vaccine for current season. The vaccine will have three strains of the flu virus such one A (H3N2) virus, one A (H1N1) virus, and one B virus. The World Health Organization (WHO), the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the FDA and other institutions have anticipated that the seasonal flu can be more vigor in this season.

Flu season in US starts in the month of October and November is the best time for vaccination.

The director of FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, Dr. Jesse L Goodman said that flu influenza is only disease in US for which vaccines are made every year. The FDA has short listed the following six companies to manufacture the vaccine:

Nine medical workers, who due to their negligence were responsible to infect 24 children with the virus of HIV, have been convicted by a court in the Central Asian state of Kyrgyzstan.

All from one hospital, three doctors have been sentenced to three years of jail for causing infection through negligence. Another six medical workers were not found guilty and thus the charges against them were dropped.

The researchers of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed a new report on AIDS and its prevention. The report has some shocking results. The people with HIV infection are increased by 40 percent as compared to previous years. 

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention spends about $750 million a year on AIDS prevention. The disease is taking life of 15000 to 18,000 Americans, according to the head of CDC's AIDS branch, Dr. Kevin Fenton. The lawmakers in congressional committee have asked the study called SEAS, which tried to find a link between cancer and cholesterol drug, Vytorin, to hand over the results to the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee had been long working on the Vytorin, which is sold jointly by Merck & Co Inc and Schering-Plough Corp.

A specific kind of cancer known as Leukemia, which affects blood and bone marrow had long been a subject of research and experiments for the doctors, since they were unable to find a proper treatment for it. But the British drug maker GlaxoSmithKline PLC on Thursday announced through a statement that its new experimental leukemia drug has shown positive results for patients who didn’t respond well to any other medication.

To reach the conclusion, the reactions of almost 140 patients were recorded after they had been administered the ofatumumab treatment. The more worrying thing is that patients, who have chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), are also prone to both fludarabine and alemtuzumab.
