A Glass Of Wine A Day Lessens Gallstone Risk

Gallstone RiskHere is a new study conducted by UK researchers.

According to the study, consuming a moderate amount of alcohol on a daily basis defends against the development of gallstones in human body.

The study researchers said that taking a glass of wine daily can slash one's gallstones risk by a third.

To come up with a solution, the researchers analyzed the eating patterns of 25,639 men and women for 10 years.

Around 267 volunteers had gallstones during the time.

The data showed that drinking two units per day cuts the chance of having gallstones by a third.

The study also discovered that every unit drunk per week lessens the chances by 3%.

Gallstones form in the gallbladder from bile, and are generally made up of hardened cholesterol.

The study scientists also said that their research suggests that alcohol helps lessen cholesterol level in the bile from which gallstones occurs.

Dr. Andrew Hart, senior lecturer in gastroenterology at the University of East Anglia said, "These findings significantly increase our understanding of the development of gallstones."

"Once we examine all the factors related to their development in our study in Britain, including diet, exercise, body weight and alcohol intake, we can develop a precise understanding of what causes gallstones and how to prevent them," Dr. Hart added.

The findings of the study were presented during the Digestive Disease Week annual meeting in Chicago.
