Goods train derailment hits Mumbai-Varanasi traffic  Lucknow, Oct 2 : Rail traffic was disrupted on the busy Mumbai-Varanasi route after a goods train derailed in Uttar Pradesh, officials said Friday.

"The accident occurred this (Friday) morning near the Cantt railway station in the Varanasi city. six wagons of the goods train derailed," Government Railway Police (GRP) inspector V. N. Dubey, told IANS over telephone.

"Exact reason behind the accident is yet to be ascertained. An inquiry by a team of high-level officials would reveal the cause behind the accident," he added.

According to officials, it will take nearly seven-eight hours to repair the tracks and restore the rail traffic on the route.

The officials said it appeared that an axle of one of the wagons broke, leading to the derailment that subsequently damaged the tracks. The train was going to Varanasi from the Mughalsarai railway station, they added.

Dubey said the accident has affected movement of as many as 12 trains. Senior railway officials were supervising the repair work

Varanasi is about 250 km from Lucknow.(IANS)
