Wellington, Dec.24: A female great white shark nicknamed Kerri, has travelled 3000 kilometres from Stewart Island in New Zealand to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, setting a new distance record for a local shark.
The 4.4 metre shark carried an electronic tag for 9 months, recording the shark's movements.
"Our tagging results show these sharks can be highly mobile, though they may also hang around seal colonies for several months at a time," Stuff.co.nz quoted Department of Conservation scientist Clinton Duffy, as saying.
"Australian tagged sharks have turned up in New Zealand waters; and now for the first time we have evidence that this is a two-way process. Our results suggest that white sharks in the south-west Pacific may comprise a single population,” he added. (ANI)
