Gujjar protestors block Mehrauli-Gurgaon road

Gurgaon, May 28 : Delhi also saw a part of Gujjars’s agitation today when a group of Gujjar protestors blocked Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road by burning tyres causing a major traffic jam.

The Gujjars who are demanding Scheduled Tribe status gathered at the M G Road area, where the major malls are located, and set afire tyres, but police intervention dispersed them, said Assistant Commissioner of Police Sumit Kumar.

Official sources said that since the Gujjar unrent was fast reaching the NCR, which has already witnessed sporadic protests, police and security agencies were keeping a close watch to prevent disruptions.

With the Gujjars threatening to bring the NCR to a halt on Thursday, large contingents of police are keeping a close watch across the Capital, especially in Gujjar-strongholds of Mehrauli, Ghazipur, Patparganj, Badarpur, Khanpur, Ayanagar, Chilia village and Rampur.

The Home Minister has also issued advisories to the authorities in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, besides Delhi.

In Rajasthan, the agitators forced shutdowns in Tonk, Sawaimadhopur, Rajsamand, Rawatbhata, Pali and Deoli areas.

Traffic was also affected on the Jaipur-Agra, Jaipur- Kota and Udaipur-Ahmedabad national highways, police sources in Jaipur said.

Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje said, “Now the entire proceedings of reservation should be done at the Centre level. The Gujjar community should take their initiatives to the Centre and use their wisdom."

She also appealed to the Gujjars to stop violence, understand the reservation procedure and come forward to settle the issue through dialogue. (ANI)
