Jaipur, June 4 : Gujjar protesters on Wednesday blocked a railway track in Dausa district of Rajasthan leading to suspension of several trains and disrupting traffic on a highway linking the state with Madhya Pradesh.

The Gujjars in Rajasthan are demanding inclusion in the list of Scheduled Tribes (ST) that will ensure reservation in Government jobs and seats in educational institutions.

For the third day, women protesters blocked Jaipur - Delhi railway track with wooden logs at Shyamlawas, 3 kms from Bandikui railway station in Dausa, collector of Dausa, Rajesh Yadav said . Police arrested twelve women protesters on Tuesday for trying to shut down a market in Bandikui. They were later released on bail, Yadav said.

Scores of agitators in Sawai Madhopur district held demonstrations on the highway linking the area with Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh disrupting traffic on it.

Meanwhile, the postmortem on the Gujjars killed in police firing and their cremation has led to incidents of violence in many areas of Rajasthan

Railways have cancelled about 13 passenger trains to Northern India from the Western region. The Railways have suffered a loss of Rs 50 lakh per day due to the agitations.

The Gujjar protests, which has spread to many places in and around Rajasthan, has disrupted road and rail traffic badly.

At least 38 people have been killed in the 12 days of violent agitations which started on May 23 this year.

In May last year, Gujjars in Rajasthan fought with police and members of another caste that already qualifies for job quotas. At least 26 people were killed in that violence.

After last year’s agitation, a committee was set up to improve the economic status of Gujjars which said it would spend Rs 2.8 billion for improving schools, clinics, roads and other infrastructure in their areas. But Gujjars had rejected this option. (ANI)
