Paris  - A gunman who went on a rampage in a town in the Alsace region overnight, shooting dead at least one person, was holed up in his apartment Friday, radio broadcaster Europe 1 reported.

Police had surrounded the apartment where the man had taken refuge after his shooting spree in which he killed at least one person and wounding another.

The radio said the suspect, 59, was apparently angered by nighttime street noise caused by youngsters when he went on his gun rampage. The incident took place in the town of Guemar, some 300 kilometres west of the capital Paris.(dpa)
