The home secretary GK Pillai has said on Monday that no upcoming sporting event in the country is under any threat from terrorist organizations.
The central government has reaffirmed that it will provide foolproof security for the international events happening in the country. Mr. Pillai said that the government has planned for security cover for events such as the Hockey World Cup, Indian Premier League (IPL) and Commonwealth Games.
He said that the government has not received information on any threat from terrorist organizations. He further said, "At the moment, there are no credible threats to any of these sporting events in India. But we will take all possible precautions in the coming months."
He responded to an advice by an English expert warning the England players to not take part in IPL and said that the government has not received inputs on new threats.
The Hockey World Cup is to begin from February 28 to March 13 and teams from Pakistan, Australia and South Africa have already arrived in the capital. About 400 players and delegates from 10 countries will participate in the championship.
After some reports of a terrorist threat, the government cautiously reviews security arrangements for the sporting events.
The Union Home minister P Chidambaram has also affirmed that the security would be provided to all the teams. The ministry has dispelled any prospects of a threat however the security arrangements are focusing first on the hockey championship.
The sources indicate that an incident at the hockey championship could lead to withdrawal of teams from other events and thus the government is not taking any chances in providing full security for the event.
