Honest cabbie awarded for handing back diamonds left in his taxi
Hong Kong - A Hong Kong cab driver who found diamonds worth 1 million Hong Kong dollars (130,000 US dollars) in his taxi and handed them to the police, has been rewarded for his honesty, a news report said Friday.
The diamonds were left under the back seat of the taxi of Yau Chi-keung by an Indonesian businessman in April last year, the South China Morning Post said.
Yau, 57, reported the bag to the police not knowing what was inside it. He only discovered the diamonds later when he checked the bag on his way to the police station.
Yau was rewarded for his honesty with a Quality Taxi Driver Award by the Commissioner for Transport Joseph Lai on Thursday.
He also received a cash reward from the owner of the diamonds which he gave to charity.
"The owner was happy to get back what was his and I'm happy because my conscience is clear," Yau said. (dpa)
