Hong Kong  - A 72-year-old Hong Kong man who threw acid at his wife after she refused to give him money to celebrate the Chinese New Year was jailed for four years Tuesday.

Cheung Cho-fat pled guilty to the January attack which left his estranged wife with burns on her face and arms.

The High Court heard his daughter was also injured by the acid when she tried to intervene.

The judge acknowledged that Cheung's wife had forgiven him, but said a jail sentence was necessary to discourage others from committing such offences. (dpa)
