Hong Kong police seize smuggled goods worth 2.7 million US dollars

Hong Kong police seize smuggled goods worth 2.7 million US dollarsHong Kong - Hong Kong police seized goods worth 2.7 million US dollars after raiding a smuggling operation in a remote seaside village, police said Friday.

The goods included 96 boxes of animal furs, making it the biggest haul of its kind this year.

Other goods included mobile phone components and computer hard disks which police believe were destined for China.

The raid Wednesday night followed a two-week surveillance operation of Tai O on Hong Kong's Lantau island.

However, police were unable to capture the suspects who dumped the goods and fled by speedboat towards China when officers moved in.

Police say the haul has dealt a heavy blow to the smuggling syndicate because of the huge amount of goods seized. (dpa)
