Hyderabad Traffic Police to create database of habitual drunken drivers

Hyderabad Traffic Police to create database of habitual drunken driversHyderabad Traffic Police has announced its plan to create a database of habitual drunken drivers in a bid to keep a close watch on habitual offenders.

C V Anand, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said the database of people often involved in drunken driving would be integrated with the help of hand-held Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) devices used by the traffic personnel.

Anand said the database would make it easy for the traffic police to access the details of offenders, such as the number of time they committed the offence and any pending fines.

Speaking on the topic, the ACP added, "The drive against drunken driving launched in November last year has seen registration of as many as 9,000 cases till date, but we don't have a database of such offenders.”

The ACP further said that the database would further intensify the enforcement of steps against the growing problem of drunken driving, and thus bringing down the number of road-crashes and deaths.

He also said that the traffic police department demanded the government to create tougher laws to discourage repeating of the offence. He suggested that imprisonment should be awarded, and fines should be imposed and licenses should be cancelled in repeated offences.

If the reading of Blood Alcohol Content is found to be above 30mg per 100ml blood in the breath analyzer test, it is regarded as drunk driving.
