Implementation of Food Security Bill will hike fiscal deficit: FICCIThe Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) has cautioned the government that the implementation of its food security bill would put additional fiscal pressure on the country.

The FICCI said in its Economic Outlook Survey that implementing the food security bill would further escalate fiscal deficit to 5 per cent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) in the current fiscal year.

The industry body said that it would make it more difficult for India to achieve its fiscal sustainability plan.

Sharing its concern, it said, "It will impose an additional pressure on the fiscal situation and . As a result, the expected fiscal deficit to GDP ratio is five per cent for 2013-14, which is slightly above the budgeted 4.8 per cent."

The government recently circulated an ordinance for implementing the Food Security Bill, which gives 67 per cent of the population the right to 5 kilograms of food grains each month at subsidized rates of just 1-3 rupees per kilogram.

The scheme is estimated to cost the government around Rs 125,000 crore per annum.
