India Introduces $30 Laptop Computer

India Introduces $30 Laptop ComputerIndia has introduced a Rs 1,500 (around $30) laptop computer, which is designed specifically for pupils.

After unveiling the low cost-access-cum computing device, Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said, "If more companies decide to manufacture a similar device, prices will come down automatically."

Mr. Sibal said that the low cost laptop would be made available to pupils by the coming year (2011).

Some years back when the ministry floated the idea of an affordable laptop computer, functionaries stated that it would cost Rs 500 ($10). It will now cost about three times the early projections.

The HRD ministry anticipates the costs to fall to Rs 1,000 ($20) and reach Rs 500 ($10) as innovations are introduced.

The new device, no bigger than a usual laptop, is a single unit system with a touch screen and a integral key board together with a 2 GB RAM memory, wi-fi connectivity, USB port and powered by a 2-watt system to suit poor power supply areas.

The ministry also invited private players to produce similar low cost computers

The ministry began its attempts by holding talks on this idea with a group of experts at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Bombay.

The HRD ministry will distribute the low cost laptops in institutions. The concluding price will hinge upon the transportation cost. (With Inputs from Agencies)
