Environment and Forest minister Jairam Ramesh offered talks with the US and Europe on India’s stand on a Kyoto-type protocol for climate change agreement in Copenhegan.

“The proposal to both Europeans and Americans was made last week,” Ramesh said in Washington on Friday.

In Bangkok, Indian negotiaters are facing tough opposition from US and Europe on the agreement, where rich countries were required to transfer technology and finances to the developing world to meet the challenges of climate change.

“Rich countries have failed on their commitment under Kyoto and are not willing to provide resources to poor countries to adapt to challenges of climate change mitigation,” said a senior government official, negotiating on behalf of India at Copenhegan. He was not willing to be quoted, as he was not authorised to speak to media.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the body responsible for conducting the negotiations, however, said there was lack of clarity on rich countries emission reduction targets and financial support for climate change action in developing countries.
