Indonesia upgrades Alert Status of Mount Sinabung to Highest Level

On Thursday, an official told that Indonesia has increased the level of threat posed by volcano on Sumatra to its maximum level. As the level was increased to its highest level, around 3,000 people were evacuated from their homes.

Mount Sinabung is quite a highly active volcano on Indonesia's westernmost island. On late Tuesday, a 'sharp rise' was seen in activities and after that the alert status was raised to its maximum level. Since Sunday, the amount of hot ash, smoke and rock coming out from the volcano has increased significantly and in fact, the lava is also visible at the crater.

Military posted in the area shared that soldiers and police have helped in the evacuation of 2,730 residents from four villages that were coming within a danger zone around the south and southeast of the volcano.

District military commander Lieutenant Colonel Asep Sukarna was of the view that the volcanic activity continues to be high today triggering tremors. "On Wednesday we worried that the volcano would send hot ash clouds down over the villages, so we moved 2,730 people to a safer place", said Sukarna.

People were aware of the danger and they left on the orders of authorities concerned. For now, there are no orders with regard to evacuate other villages. People who have been evacuated will live in temporary shelter, situated 13 km from the volcano.

Sinabung is one of 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia present on the Pacific Ring of Fire.
