Indonesian lawmaker arrested on bribery charges

Indonesian lawmaker arrested on bribery chargesJakarta - An Indonesian lawmaker was arrested Wednesday after he was caught red-handed at a Jakarta luxury hotel receiving a bribe worth nearly 200,000 dollars, lawmakers and anti-corruption watchdog officials said.

Al-Amin Nasution, a member of the House of Representative (DPR) from the Muslim-based United development Party, along with four other persons, were arrested by Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) authorities early Wednesday at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in downtown Jakarta.

During the raid, the KPK officials seized some 1.8 billion rupiah (195,100 dollars) in cash. Two of the arrested suspects were females.

One of the women was alleged to be a prostitute, the state-run Antara news agency reported.

The KPK's deputy chairman, Chandra Hamzah, confirmed the arrest of Nasution, saying that the alleged bribe case was linked to a conversion plan of protected forests into an industrial plantation estate in Riau province in eastern Sumatra.

The lawmaker's arrest comes one month after a senior Indonesian prosecutor was caught red-handed by anti-corruption authorities and charged wih accepting a bribe of
660,000 dollars in cash from a businesswoman.

Experts consistently rate Indonesia as among the world's most corrupt nations, with legal uncertainty and perceived graft in the judicial system among some of the most frequent complaints of foreign investors operating in the country.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono won Indonesia's first direct presidential vote in October 2004 on a pledge to end corruption.

Since Yudhoyono's anti-graft campaign started, officials including provincial governors and former ministers have been jailed on corruption charges. (dpa)
